Erik XVIThe Fading Splendour of a Technological Future

In a parallel dimension not often intruded upon by the living, the sounds to which we dance took a decidedly different turn around the time of the latest millennium change. In this twilight world at the 90th parallel, the custodians of the 90 drums beat out their steadfast but languid rhythm at an ever-decreasing pace year after year. Ghostly apparitions flicker in the dusk and mysterious semblances shimmer in the cold, entranced by disembodied choirs of haunted voices singing in the distance.

As the dance progresses, the plaintive hymn to the machines gradually escalates into a preparation for battle, as the holy technocrats push their sacred machines to ever more intense configurations of desire. The cascading shards of ice that envelop this polar scene give rise to magnificent and otherworldly echoing tones, but sadly also contribute to the terminal decay of the ancient technology favoured by the undead to create their hypnotic sounds.

Intrepid explorer Erik XVI gained unprecedented access to the fading splendour of this parallel future, and succeeded in bringing back this unique audio artefact, a field recording of what happened to the music we call techno in an alternative universe.

> Introducing Broken20

hello
welcome to Broken20.

Broken20 is a new label from ruaridhTVO, with assistance from production unit and erstlaub

Broken20 will release all sorts of music. Rather than be genre-tied, we will be releasing music rooted in a particular aesthetic – releases concerned with decay, erosion, entropy, mistakes and errors, line noise and tape hiss, hum and buzz.

We’ll primarily be a digital download label, although there will be forays into highly limited cd- and dvd-r variants of our releases. We hope to eventually release some vinyl editions.

> Forthcoming Events

September 5th TVO live at Eclectica Festival, in Tartu, Estonia

September 11th Broken20 event at the Glasshouse, Dundee courtesy of n_ilk – naeilk.com. Live longform collaboration between TVO and Erstlaub as well as solo performances from each.

November 6th TVO live with Production Unit and more at lab30 festival, Augsburg, Germany.

> B20 Soundcloud now live

Hi;
Just a quick note to say that the official Broken20 SoundCloud page has now gone live.
Up now are some exclusive previews of our first release, as well as an excerpt from b20_03 from Erstlaub. Coming up will be a track from our next release from Isodyne as well as some other nice bits.

> Rose and Sandy on Moving Furniture

2/3rds of Broken20′s operations team, ruaridhTVO and production unit, are releasing their debut album on Dutch experimental label Moving Furniture Records. It’s a live, improvised ambient/drone album based around a stringed instrument much like a zither, processed in real-time.

More details, the liner notes and an excerpt can be found here on Soundcloud – the excerpt is also below.

Despite our b20 web-bot forgetting to post this up on the main page, our 4th podcast has been getting masses of hits and acclaim. Erik XVI, a fellow Highpoint Lowlife traveller, has really hit on something with the very unique way of recording a techno mix he’s utilised. He talks about his process here – but i’d recommend checking the mix first from our Podcasts Page to avoid spoiling the surprise.

> BrokenZeroFour – Euan Me

Our newest album in the BrokenZero ‘precursor’ series is now online here
From Dirty Hope, aka Broken20 member Dave Production Unit, Euan Me is a beautiful ambient exploration of childhood. More info and very detailed sleevenotes at the link above.

Our new podcast is now online. Coming from dj Alextronic of Liverpool’s Hive Collective (the people who put on the performance that we’re releasing, and who are helping put together the DVD) it’s a live recording of a dj set he performed at the Tate in Liverpool last year. Featuring Zoviet France, Chris Watson and S-Express, it’s a joy to behold.

Pick it up on the podcasts page now.

> Podcast 02

Podcast 2 is from Rose and Sandy, a dusted off set from April 2006 that was originally on the NSD podcast series. Taking in field recordings, ambient interludes, spoken word and some swung beats, it’s an archive session that still manages to encapsulate where Broken20 is going.

Check the podcast page to sign up.

> BrokenZeroThree – The Long Road

The latest in our free BrokenZeroThree release series has just gone live. “The Long Road”, from Dundee based artist Erstlaub was originally a 2006 cd-r of dark, droning ambient. We’re making it available in advance of new work from him appearing on Broken20 very soon.

Our first podcast went live an hour ago.
‘On Becoming Invisible’ is a 70 minute exploration of drone, dark-ambient and post rock, blended together by Dundee-based artist Erstlaub who will be releasing new music with us in the next few months.

It’s pretty amazing stuff. Check the podcast link and get stuck in.
Next podcast is from label head TVO and should be here in a couple of weeks…

> BrokenZero

BrokenZero is a series of precursors to Broken20 – releases prior to the present that still fit into the chronology. Where possible we will be giving these releases away for free.

The first two, BrokenZeroOne and BrokenZeroTwo are up now, to be followed in the next few days by BrokenZeroThree
